Saturday, April 21st 2012

The fog banks and impending rains did not stop the crowds from attending Saturday night’s Bit Players performance and they were not disappointed in the high energy, fun-filled show.
Beth , a teacher of small children, was called upon in the audience to provide the fodder for a “Doo Run Song” in which the Bit Players made up a song about her.  However, something must have gone terribly wrong in the translation, as the teacher that Frank Fusaro, Dylan Eberle, and Tim Bric sang about was anyone BUT the person you would want molding young minds.  This teacher not only smoked crack, but also was busted for having dime bags in her classroom.
Tim Bric, Dylan Eberle, and John Mulligan
in "Director"
Next up was “Director”,  a bit where our director, Frank, tries to get his actors, Dylan, Tim and John Mulligan, to perform a scene in his play, “Why Is The Blue Monkey Crying”.  Frank, trying to get the best from his actors, force them to repeat the scene over and over again using different genres and emotions until they get it right.

"Sportscasters", Frank Fusaro and Dylan Eberle report on
the antics of Shaving Bowl 2012 players,
John Mulligan and Vlad Tenenbaum
In “Sportscaster”, our sports reporters Dylan and Frank reported on the sport of “Shaving” performed by John and Vlad Tenenbaum.  Not only did we witness a massacre on the field of play where John’s character was killed off by Vlad’s, we had the added benefit to seeing it replayed in slow motion.  But in case you missed it or want to relive it yet again, click here for the video --> : http://youtu.be/kbJ_NnW06JY

A lucky audience member, Marilyn, celebrating her 60th birthday with her friends from Long Island, NY was called up onto the stage to be “Serenaded” by the Bit Players. The “Dating Game” was next in the rotation and had the crowds roaring as Tim the hopeful dater was presented with three “eligible bachelors”.  Dylan was reliving Chernobyl, Vlad who had incredibly large feet, and John who was ashamed of his “magnetism”.  Tim had to deduce their idiosyncrasies and choose his date from among the three.
The Bit Players "Serenade" Marilyn,
celebrating her 60th birthday
An audience favorite, “Visual Interpreter” saw our expert on the topic of ghosts, Dylan (aka Jean Claude Van Der Castle) interviewed by Tim.  Mr Van Der Castle not only explained how he became an expert on the topic of ghosts, Vlad “interpreted” this story.  Mr Van Der Castle from a very early age was plagued by the paranormal, when in his crib, his very own Teddy Bear displayed dagger-like teeth and demonic qualities.  Our baby Van Der Castle had to perform a baby exorcism on his teddy.  Mr. Van Der Castles journeys as a baby took him to other places as well, like the Delta crossroads and to Japan.  But were these events real?  Or were they really just "the delusions of a drunk baby?"

Two members of the audience assist
Dylan Eberle and John Mulligan in "Puppets"
Two audience members got a chance to come up on stage and assist in a bit called “Puppets”.  Our puppets, John and Dylan were put through their paces as our assistants took them through some hilariously and somewhat suggestive extreme posing!

Musicians Chase Ceglie
and Mikel Arambarri-Bellagamba
Joining regular musician Chase Ceglie was Mikel Arambarri-Bellagamba on guitar for tonight’s show.  Also back to entertain the Firehouse Theatre crowds for this weekend was fellow Bit, Frank Fusaro.
Frank Fusaro, Vlad Tenenbaum,
Neal Leaheey, John Mulligan
and Dylan Eberle in "Slide Show" to Antartica

Taking us all on an adventure to Antarctica, Frank narrated “Slide Show” where we learned about Eskimo culture, where the natives fight for survival by poking their enemy to the death, not with clubs, but with their fingers.  We also saw the indiginous baby seals during our tour there.  This fact was important as Frank pointed out, “Because you never know when you’re going to go clubbing!”
“Late to Work” a bit where our habitually late worker, John Mulligan needs an excuse yet again, to tell his Boss, Neal Leaheey for his tardiness.  The excuse,  provided through mime by co-worker, Vlad Tenenbaum began while John was driving to work. Astoundingly, John came upon a talking beaver on the side of the road.  Enchanted by the beaver, John  trained it to sing.  Amazed at the beaver’s talents, John realized that he could make some money and decided to sell the beaver on Ebay.  But much to John’s chagrin, the beaver became angry that he was being sold and ate John’s car.  Being  resourceful, John was forced to hunt down a unicorn and ride it to work.
In the second set the audience favorite bit of the night “Good Cop / Bad Cop” saw our incorrigible perpetrator, Neal being guided by Frank and Dylan into confessing to the crime of “Killing Tony the Tiger with a tikki torch, in a confessional”.  It is unclear who was more tortured in this scene.  Was it Neal for not getting the clues?  Or was it Dylan and Frank for working so hard to dole the clues out?  Check out the video “Good Cop/ Bad Cop – “The Tikki Wars” on our YouTube Channel and you decide.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1_Hyn14Ypc&context=C4f7c35bADvjVQa1PpcFNlazU-rbbFBdJpiTxFCCe15UH_ofX5gAQ=

Audience member, Wendy is "Serenaded" by the Bit Players
Celebrating a birthday and coaxed by her all-girl posse, audience member Wendy came up on the stage to be “Serenaded” by the Bit Players.  Don’t know if the boys in the back got Wendy’s number or not but they certainly were  interested… especially after learning that Wendy is a CEO of her own company.  Enquiring minds want to know!

Vlad Tenenbaum in
"Art Class"
Vlad, the consummate story-teller through mime, took us all to “Art Class”.  The inspiration for the story’s contents were provided by the audience suggestions of how they interpreted the artwork.  Vlad then wove all of the suggestions of a Balloon, Ice cream, Heart, Egg, Duck, and Lamp into  a mimed story…  (Amusingly, we thought he cheated a little on the lamp… The audience loved it!)

Audience members (Hannah & Emily)
join Frank Fusaro and Dylan Eberle
on stage in "Tap The Audience"
Two young audience members (Hannah and Emily) were asked to join the players on stage in a bit called “Tap The Audience” .  In the scene Hannah and Emily got to fill in the blanks for Frank, the Prosecutor, and Dylan, the Defense Lawyer when the girls were “tapped”.

Family Friendly Show - April 18th 2012

The Bit Players perform "Slide Show" - Welcome to Italy?
It’s Spring Break and we all know what that means…  For parents, it’s a week of pulling one’s hair out and dealing with the kiddies.  And parents, if you hear your kids utter the phrase, “But, there’s nothing to do!” one more time you will scream.  Am I right??  For the kids, the boredom has set in after having mastered every level of the latest “World of Warcraft”, and eaten all of the Bagel Bites and Tostinos…  Thankfully, the Bit Players came to the rescue and provided a brief respite for both parties to enjoy together.
In “Slide Show”  (hosted by Ryan Hartigan and performed by the cast) we all got to take a trip to Italy (from the comforts of the Firehouse Theatre with a nice hot chocolate in hand) where we learned a bit about the Italian culture where the beatings of Borden Patrol Agents and riding them through the Italian countryside are commonplace.  But it is considered bad form should you not offer the agent an ice cream cone, after having ridden on their back.
Fourteen year old, Taylor got a taste of what it would be like to be a veteranarian for a day in “Doo Run Song”.  Stephanie Conrad, Neal Leaheey, and Jim Foley captured the the day perfectly in heartwarming tale of saving a St Bernard dog who went on to rescue people from the snow.  And the recovery of a cat who went on to have a career in cartoons.
Neal Leaheey and Jim Foley in "Alphabetical Shakespeare"
(with Ryan Hartiga as the dead father)
Neal and Jim took on “Alphabetical Shakespeare” where we saw a miserly Jim squandering his money and attempting to toss his brother and mother onto the street for non-payment of the rent.  But instead of becoming redeemed (ala Scrooge’s transformation), Jim transfers his apathetic attitude of humanity onto Neal, as both watch their father die before them, and neither brother is burdened by the loss. (And to add insult to injury, Jim may have accidentally showered his dead father lying prone on the stage, in spittle…  Or was it an accident? Hmmmmmmm)
Neal Leaheey (Student) and Jim Foley (Principal)
in "Late To School" with Vlad Tenenbaum (mime)
“Late to School” saw our naughty student, Neal, try to connive his way out of detention from Principal Jim, with the aid of his friend, Vlad who provided a “likely excuse” for our wayward Neal.  In the scene we heard that Neal’s morning started off with difficulty as there was not electricity in his house, and therefore his alarm clock did not wake him up on time.  But Neal knew the necessity of a nutritious meal before school so he had to stop to make a Beef & Swiss Sandwich.  (Doesn’t everyone eat Beef and Swiss for breakfast?  By then, neal had missed the bus so he was forced to use his pogo stick to get halfway to school.  But his pogo stick broke and with all of the pogo-ing, Neal required an energy boost, so he stopped off at Dunkin’ Donuts for a muffin.  But as all good stories have a happy ending, so too does this, as Neal finally made it to school in helicopter….  And all without detention.

The evening concluded with the whole cast singing a “Rock Song” about a Pineapple.  Click to watch the video --->  http://youtu.be/wyVv3loJVpc

Friday and Saturday (April 13th and 14th) 2012

With our two regular musicians (Chase Ceglie and Devon Mello) on a brief hiatus, and Boston traffic laying claim to Ryan Hartigan and Neal Leaheey, the remaining Bit Players (Vlad Tenenbaum, Tim Bric, Dylan Eberle, and John Mulligan) were left to fly the ship on their own.  But the show must go on...
In “Word At A Time Story” we learned about Kim and her chair made in Poland.  But as John so deftly pointed out as the story concluded, the chairs were actually made in England.
Vlad selected a very delighted audience member, Erma,  as the topic of a “Doo Run Song”.  Although a social worker by day, Erma’s secret desire was to become a movie star.  Tim, Dylan, and John succeeded in making Erma’s dreams come true in a song all about her life as a starlette.
With our intrepid Bit Players released from the snarls of Boston traffic, Neal and Ryan joined in “Slide Show” where Ryan took us on a trip to Greece, a place where Greek Gods abound, and time (personified by Vlad) stands still.
Neal Leaheey in "Bartender"
with Vlad Tenenbaum, Dylan Eberle
and Ryan Hartigan on guitar
Tim Bric in "Bartender"
with Vlad Tenenbaum, Dylan Eberle
and Ryan Hartigan on guitar
In “Bartender” Neal lamented about his job and how he literally ran the place since he was the only employee, but had no time to sleep.  Bartender, Vlad, advised him that this was a good thing since Neal could not only do whatever he wanted, he could give himself raises and go on vacation. Tim entered the bar having a little problem with coping with his Mother ragging on the fact that he was 40, still living at home , and so what, if he boozed it up, right?  Dylan offered Tim some advice of killing his mother and then keeping her body in the house, just like Norman Bates.  Ryan quipped to our bartenders about losing his underwear.  But Dylan didn’t see this as such a problem and he proposed to Ryan that they both go on a panty raid together.

Neal Leaheey, John Mulligan,
and Dylan Eberle with Ryan Hartigan (Host)
in "MoonDoggy"
An audience favorite bit, "MoonDoggy" featuring Neal, John and Dylan, with Ryan hosting taught us a bit about galactic politics as we took a trip into the outer reaches to a planet (Morgan 5) named after our expert, where we learned that voting is done by the planet's inhabitants killing themselves.  This political system enabled our expert to become a Space God.

The Saturday night performance saw lots of new faces.  Joining the Bit Players in a very special guest performance was Gillian Bellinger, who performs improv with Second City in Los Angeles, CA.  The musical accompaniment was provided by Navy Show band members Chuck Malone (on Keyboard) and Mike Sapien (on guitar).
Gillian Bellinger and Dylan Ebere
in "Alphabetical Shakespeare"
Dylan and Gillian knocked one out of the park with “Alphabetical Shakespeare”.  Taking us along on a strange cross-dressing tale of love, lust and murder, Dylan’s conjoined twin was an unwanted third wheel in the path of Gillian’s love/hate desire for Dylan.  Gillian plotted to kill off the twin and satiate her desire.  (Click the link to watch the video: http://youtu.be/Gc7-QS8ZTi4  )
A bit that we haven’t seen in a while, “Late To Work” captivated the audience as Vlad mimed an excuse to Gillian to provide to Stephanie Conrad, The Boss, as a plausible explanation of Gillian’s tardiness.  We learned of Gillian’s harrowing experience of dealing with her dead cat and putting it in the freezer.  And… naturally, since a freezer is a receptacle for food, this made Gillian hungry for Chinese Food. (**) Then, as if that were not enough reason for her lateness, Gillian found her car had been stolen by Godzilla and had to ride a unicorn to work.  (Note** No cats were actually harmed in the making of this scene.)

Stephanie Conrad in "Bartender"
with Dylan Eberle (Alien payed by Gillian Bellinger)

Gillian Bellinger in "Bartender"
with Dylan Eberle
Vlad Tenebaum in "Bartender"
with Dylan Eberle
In Saturday’s  “Bartender” we saw Dylan as the bartender and Vlad, Stephanie, and Gillian were the bar’s patrons.  Stephanie bemoaned her bad luck at having an asteroid hit her apartment and now an alien being was growing out of her head.  Dylan optimistically advised her that she could use it to her advantage as a new villain, much like from the movie “Spiderman 3”.  Vlad sang his tale of woe of losing his hair and teeth after taking small pills to improve his virility that he had purchased from a Canadian Internet site.  Dylan chided Vlad by telling him that "All Canadians lie!" Gillian had a chilling tale about a cheating, murderous husband.  Gillian described her desire to make him pay with his life by using various kitchen gadgets and implements in the demise of her husband.  Dylan commiserated with Gillians' plight, admitting to having a cheating wife of his own.  Not only did Dylan help to plot Gillian's revenge, the two contrived to go on a killing spree of their own together.
Dylan Eberle and Gillian Bellinger
with two audience members
in "Puppets"
Roy and Bobbie, celebrating 20 years together were regaled in “Epic Poem” style as Vlad, Gillian, and Dylan gave Roy and Bobbie a taste of their dream jobs together (and maybe ideas for a little role playing later?) as a pilot and his stewardess. Other audience members got a chance to participate on stage, as well, bending and contorting Dylan and Gillian in a bit called “Puppets”.

Friday, April 6th and Saturday, April 7th 2012

Vlad Tenenbaum and Neal Leaheey (center)
with John Mulligan and Kevin Killavey
Ryan Hartigan narrating "Slideshow"
An introspective crowd filled the Firehouse on Good Friday, the solemnest  day of the Easter weekend festivities.  Unlike the crowd of Jesus’ day, our audience did not cry out for Barabbas.  Instead they soon were swept up in the zany antics of the Bit Player’s world of improv characters that came to life before their very eyes.  During “Slideshow” we traveled to the far corners of the world on a trip to Canada with Ryan Hartigan narrating.  We saw Eastern European influenced statues of Aphrodite entwined with the “cultured” peoples of our northern border neighbors.  Vlad Tenenbaum could hardly contain his laughter standing almost nose to nose with Neal Leaheey.
Two members of the audience (Chris and his pregnant wife Lisa) were the subject of a “Doo Run Song” performed by Ryan, Neal, and Kevin Killavey.  To keep the audience participation going, with Chase Ceglie and Devon Mello accompanying them (on saxophone and keyboards), The Bit Players “Serenaded” a couple (Jim and Emmy Sullivan) who were planning on having their daughter’s 16th Birthday at the Firehouse (guess they really wanted the gig).  See their video here -> http://youtu.be/Z8Vq4hOqLug
John Mulligan, Dylan Eberle,
and Ryan Hartigan in
"Day in the Life Dream/Nightmare"
Ending the 1st set, before the intermission break was“Day in the Life Dream/Nightmare” a bit resurrected from the Bit Players attic repertoire.  In this sequence of scenes we saw a reenactment of a Day in the Life of an audience member (Amanda, the Theatre Director).  In the 1st scene we saw Amanda’s worst possible day “The Nightmare”, with hungry crows lurking over her bed, attempts at being forced-fed, and inept actors not heeding her blocking and cues.  In the “Dream Sequence” the audience delighted in this version of Amanda having satisfied several of her lovers, to the accompaniment of a lute-player, and actors who performed her work so well that she was lauded by critics for her NY debut premier of her show.
Kevin Killavey, Neal Leaheey, Ryan Hartigan,
Vlad Tenenbaum, John Mulligan, and Dylan Eberle
in Mini-Musical "Flowers in Bloom"
The highlight of the 2nd set on Friday night was a Mini-Musical entitled, “Flowers in Bloom” where the audience was taken on a musical journey of three gardeners (played by Kevin, Neal and Ryan)  who meet the evil Lords Yaxley (John Mulligan and Dylan Eberle) who try to prevent our gardeners from displaying their beautiful flowers at the flower show.  The Lords Yaxley turn their poisonous Russian flower loose on our gardeners.  But the goodness of organic gardening, along with pooping birds to fertilize their flowers, win out, and the evil Lords Yaxley are defeated.
The Bit Players "Serenade"
newlyweds, Jimmy and Kelly
The Saturday night audience was an interesting mix of young and old which leant to wonderfully imaginative suggestions.  Newlyweds, Jimmy and Kelly Smith (a HS History Teacher and Behavior Therapist) were the focus of this night’s “Serenade” where our players poked light-hearted fun at Jimmy’s decision to take his wife to Disneyworld on their honeymoon.
Captivating the audience in a way in which only Vlad Tenenbaum can do in his mime-sketch “Art Class”, Vlad had several members of the audience draw a collective picture on paper and then describe the picture in words.  The words became the suggestions for Vlad’s story, which included a Christmas tree, lollypop, an eagle, a lobster, a coat hanger, and graffiti all played out in a cohesive story told with his body, through mime.

Matt Lindman, Stephanie Conrad, and
Jim Foley in "Bartender"
In “Bartender” Tim Bric with the suggestion of not paying taxes, was a lamenting 6 year old lemonade stand owner.  Bartender, Stephanie Conrad, crooned sympathy of Tim’s plight, in her chorus of “So you’re not gonna pay taxes, to the IRS, because they asked for it, because they need it…” (to the tune of Sara Bareillas’  “Love Song”).  Matt Lindman, our long-lost Bit Player who has been away at school, entertained the audience suggestion of a roof leaking with his story about finding the game, Jumanji.

Ryan Hartigan, Tim Bric, Jim Foley,
and Matt Lindman in "MoonDoggy"
Not scripted, but funnily in keeping with the religious theme of the weekend, “MoonDoggy” saw our expert, Reverend Jamie Miller (performed by Jim, Tim, and Matt) as an authority on God.  Interviewed by Ryan, we learned that Rev. Miller first encountered God in aisle 9 at COSCO where God was purchasing toothpicks.  When asked what the toothpicks were for, the Rev Miller explained that God used them to pick a new Savior by flicking them at people.  Ryan then asked how God knew that the person selected was indeed the Savior.  God replied that they would exclaim, “Oh, Yeah!”  to which the audience, without missing a beat, responded in unison “Oh, Yeah!”

"Pull All The Fire Alarms From My Heart"
Bit Players perform
"Mini-Musical"
Finishing out the weekend with a Mini-Musical entitled “Pull All The Fire Alarms From My Heart”, an imaginative suggestion provided by a 9 yo boy in the front row, the Bit Players took everyone on a fun-filled, roller-coaster ride of a school-aged love story.  Words cannot do this piece justice.  You have to watch the video to appreciate its hilarity.
The enthralled audience not only appreciated the Bit Player’s efforts on the evening, they showed it by rewarding the players with standing ovation. So, come out and see what the excitement is all about in person! Friday, March 30th and Saturday, March 31st 2012

Chase Ceglie on Saxophone Devon Mello on Keyboard
The final weekend of March and Irish Heritage month means that this was the last weekend for the bit “Pot O’ Gold” in the Bit Players rotation.  Awwww….  But never fear BP fans, it shall be replaced with new favorites.
Chase Ceglie and Devon Mello entertained the crowd this weekend with their new piano-synthesized toy, and their renditions of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” and  Van Halen’s “Jump” which saw many in the crowd humming or even singing along to these 80’s favs.  Also, the Friday show saw Frank Fusaro return to the stage with the Bit Players for a one night performance.

"Helping Hands" performed by Neal Leaheey, Jim Foley
(and the hands - Vlad Tenenbaum and Stephanie Conrad)

A bit called “Helping Hands” got the audience laughing as we saw a Doctor (Jim Foley) /Patient (Neal Leaheey) and their relationship go very wrong as their “hands” played by Stephanie Conrad and Vlad Tenenbaum had our Doctor Jim syncing up his heartbeat with Neal in a rather intimate way as a cure for Neal’s insomnia.
The Bit Players recognized Navy pilot, Mark in a “Doo Run Song” which not only got applause for Mark’s service, it also pleased the audience.  While Vlad interviewed Mark and his wife , Claudia, we learned about Claudia’s description of Mark as being “forgetful and sexy”.  This provided much fodder for The Bits in their song which crooned about Mark taking Claudia a “Mile High”.
The highlight of Friday night show had to be “Stunt Doubles” where Frank and Jim were given the suggestion of being in a ballet school. The twist of the scene was that Frank and Jim, as acting divas, did not perform any of their own physical actions.  These actions were performed by Vlad and Neal.

Check out the video on YouTube for the hillarity that ensued:  http://youtu.be/E8-5WSuAAG8

Neal Leaheey as the Leprechaun,
with Dylan Eberle and Stephanie Conrad in
"Pot O' Gold"
The Saturday night show saw lots of crazy antics.  Pot O’ Gold saw Neal as the leprechaun being interrogated by Stephanie and Dylan Eberle.  Our obstinate leprechaun had to reveal from whom he stole his gold, what object he hid it in, and where he hid the object.  With Neal out of the theatre, our interrogators, recieved suggestions from the audience: Robin Williams, a goat head, and an insane asylum, which our interrogators had to provide clues to Neal to guess the items in a wacky scene, which had Dylan at one point holding Neal in a head lock!

Vlad Tenenbaum sings his problem of "Alien Adoption"
to Bartender Stephanie Conrad

Dylan Eberle sings to Stephanie Conrad
the consequences of stealing his
father's car
“Bartender” The Bit Players’ signature piece, had everyone in stitches, especially with Vlad being adopted by aliens, and Dylan stealing his father’s (David Hasselhoff) car!
Vlad Tenenbaum interviews the "expert"
(Dylan Eberle, Steph Conrad, and Neal Leaheey)
 in MoonDoggy
The always entertaining bit, “MoonDoggy” amused the crowd, as Vlad interviewed our expert on “break dance fighting”.  Our expert's name: Daniel Boone (played by Dylan, Neal, and Stephanie).  We learned that Mr Boone learned this “art” from his mother at 1 year old, ate cranberries and crow, and his idol was Ronald Reagan.  When asked by an audience member why he stutters, our rather indignant expert replied back, “Why is your face so fat?”  and to another member of the audience asking about clothing, our expert retorted, “I wear high top sneakers, and school fools like you!”

Vlad Tenenbaum in "Love Story"
Vlad did what Vlad does best, and charmed the crowd with a Love Story (about audience members Cheryl & Tom celebrating their 20th anniversary) told only in the manner that Vlad can tell it.
Rounding out the Saturday night show was an “Irish Drinking Song” performed by Dylan, Neal, Stephanie, and Vlad about Danny the Coal Miner.
