Frank, Stephanie, and John
in "Good Cop / Bad Cop"
There is something about a warm summer’s evening that makes me wax poetic (or at least plagiarize other’s words).  As Shakespeare so aptly put it; “This is very midsummer madness.”  And it was madness that ensued at the Firehouse Theater this weekend.
The antics began on Friday as Stephanie Conrad took on the perpetrator role in “Good Cop / Bad Cop”, confessing to the crime of killing Monica Lewinsky, with bubble wrap, in a Karaoke Bar, but not before some quips by John Mulligan and Frank Fusaro about cigars and saving the packaging from recent, multiple electronics purchases.
Jim, Anna, and Dylan
perform "Doo Run Song"
Audience members, Rob and Peggy were the focus of a “Doo Run Song” performed by Anna Smith, Jim Foley, and Dylan Eberle.  But I think our couple may have made a few of The Bits a little nervous, fearing either an IRS audit from Peggy, or the target of a covert, secret agent mission by Rob.
Anna, John, Frank and Jim
in "Helping Hands"
A long lost bit “Helping Hands” was resurrected from mothballs.  The audience delighted in seeing our Train Conductors, Jim and Frank go to fisticuffs which were provided by Anna and John.
Anna and John "helping"
Frank and Jim
In the second set, Denise, a furniture store owner by day, was privileged to live out her dream of becoming a lawyer in an “Epic Poem” performed by Stephanie, Anna, and Jim.  Click the link to the video -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjyRVojRR4k&feature=plcp
The wackiness did not subside with the next Bit, “Stunt Doubles”. In this scene, Anna and Frank (our actors who were portraying therapists), call on their stunt doubles, (Dylan and John) to perform any of their physical actions in the scene. Click the link -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOwOtxeZNr4
Aaron is "Serenaded" by The Bit Players
“When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton”…  Oh, wait… that was The Lord of the Rings…  But there was still much excitement at the Firehouse Theater with Chef, Aaron celebrating his birthday with the Bit Players.  Aaron, and his mates celebrating with him were rewarded by the Bit Players with a “Serenade” all about Aaron. (and it seems that Aaron had the “IT” factor that somehow made most of the male cast of the Bit Players admit their attraction to him)
The madcap hijinx didn’t stop on Saturday .  Lots of people were celebrating various events with the Bit Players, including three birthdays, an anniversary, a bachelorette party, and the first ever bachelor party at the Firehouse.
Bailey celebrates her 13th Birthday
with The Bit Players
First to be recognized in the audience was longtime Bit Player fan, Bailey, celebrating her 13th Birthday with her friends, Hannah, Sarah, and the rest of her posse, all made possible by Mom, Liz.  Click the link to the video -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3dKM0qWPRc&feature=youtu.be
Frank and Anna in "Stunt Doubles"
“Stunt Doubles” was brought back again on Saturday and was equally as hilarious as the night before, with Anna and Frank, again the actors in the scene, but this time it was Vlad Tenenbaum and John as their stunt backups. Click the link to the video -> http://youtu.be/0VUyLrZKqbc

Bobbie is interviewed by Frank

Vlad and John in "Stunt Doubles"
Then there was Bobbie, our Budweiser sales rep and bachelor, who true to his brand, was enjoying a "Bud" with his buds.  In an interview we learned that Bobbie (last name Berry) would soon to be marrying Lauren.  We also learned that Bobbie had hopes to someday have a son who he planned on naming Blue, and Bobbie’s soon to be father-in-law, Jerry, may or may not have known about Lauren’s “sleep-overs”. The information gained in the interview became the plot of a scene game called “Day in the Life of Bobbie” starring the entire Bit Players Cast.
The audience captures
"Irish Drinking Song" on their cell phones
Jen, a Kindergarten teacher, celebrating her birthday was honored with an “Irish Drinking Song” sung by Frank, Brittany, Dylan, and John… (Did Brittany utter a naughty comment????)

The Bit Players perform
"Irish Drinking Song"

Then there were Sherry and Paul celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. Modest, Sherry a stay-at-home mom (the hardest profession as Frank pointed out) was wooed by professor, Paul when they met while working at a bank.  Paul asked Sherry out after having crashed his car into hers.  Wow!  Talk about being “Hit on”.  As a tribute to Paul and Sherry, Vlad performed their life in a mime piece called “Love Story.
Frank and Dylan with bachelorette, Kate
and maid-of-honor, Meg in "Tap The Audience"
Vlad tells a "Love Story"
Finally, there was Kate our bachelorette, marrying Ryan, who was accompanied by a whole entourage of women claiming to be in her wedding party, with not just one, but two maids-of-honor.  Sorry ladies, but she chose Meg to be with her on stage with the Bit Players in a game called “Tap The Audience”.  (Guess she loves Meg best…. Jk)
The last bit of the night, “Rock Song” about nap time, had the audience in stitches.  The crowd could not get enough of the Bit Players and called for an “Encore” in which the Bits dutifully satisfied with a finale “Blues Song” about comfort food
With a sellout of their 8:00pm show, the Bit Players also performed a second late night, 10:00pm show.
Dylan prepares for immersion in "Head in a Bucket"
Vlad's "Head in a Bucket"
Frank's "Head in a Bucket"
The piece that everyone was waiting for, in the late night show, was “Head in a Bucket” where a player must keep his head submerged in a bucket filled with water until his scene partners can justify leaving the scene and then take his place in the bucket.  It was not “Galligher” but the audience delighted in a very wet Frank, Dylan, and Vlad.

Friday, June 15th and Saturday, June 16th 2012

A somewhat less argued philosophical debate, “Which came first; Mothers or Fathers” could have given us cause for reflection on this Father’s Day weekend, but not at the Firehouse Theater, the  home of the Bit Players.  Here is where both sexes are equally lambasted and are used for comical fodder and good natured humiliation (if there is such a thing).

The Bit Players in "Story Styles"
Frank, Neal, and Dylan in
"Good Cop / Bad Cop"
Starting off the night in a bit called “Story Styles” , audience member Joe got to live a dream (or nightmare) in a story entitled, “The Day Joe Was Kicked Out of Math Class” performed by the entire Bit Players cast.
In “Good Cop / Bad Cop” James Worthington III, (of the Jamestown Worthingtons, …spoken with an upturned nose) played by Neal Leaheey, was coerced into a confession, (by our cops, Frank Fusaro and Dylan Eberle) of killing “The Kool Aid Man” with a “Clipped Toe nail” (oh, how droll) in “Davy Jones Locker.

The Bit Players "Serenade",  Bachelorette Sarah

5th Grade Teacher ,Sarah, due to marry Dan in a few weeks time was “Serenaded” by the Bit Players.  The Players had a little fun with Sarah jibing about Dan’s claim at teaching, as a Phys Ed teacher and also of Sarah and Dan’s rivalry in baseball teams, with Sarah supporting the CORRECT team, the Red Sox, and Dan (who should be severely punished by being forced to listen to Yogi Berra sound bites) routing for the Yankees. View the video here: -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7ZVcitI-vc&feature=youtu.be
Vlad Tenenbaum in "Art Class"

“Art Class” is always a joy to watch as Vlad Tenenbaum tells such amazing stories with his body, through mime, as he incorporated the audience suggestions of a chicken, soda, face, TV, and umbrella into a wonderful narrative entitled “Home Alone”.

Dylan, Frank, Matt, and Vlad in "Sports Casters"

In “Sports Casters” Frank and Dylan, aka Chet and Chip, reported on the “Bed-Skirt 2012” where Jose Rodrigues (played by Matt Lindman), and Stephanie Susan (played by Vlad) competed to the death in the sport of bed making.

In the second set of Friday’s show, another bachelorette in the house, Amanda , and a birthday girl, Alicia received a treat and were invited up to the stage in a bit called “Tap The Audience” performed by Matt and Frank. “Yeah, That was Easy!”
Anna and John in
"Shakespeare Alphabet"

Matt and Frank perform "Tap The Audience" with
audience members, Amanda and Alicia

On Saturday’s night’s first show at 8:00pm, the theatre at capacity, The Bit Players were in full stride.  In “Shakespeare Alphabet” John Mulligan and Anna Smith performed a sexy tragedy??  (With those two, you just never know)  John was given some Shakespearean version of Viagra by Anna in this bizarre scene.

Frank and Matt in "Actor's Nightmare"

John and fellow Bits "Serenade bachelorette, Jen

Frank and Matt took on “Actor’s Nightmare”.  In this bit, an audience member selected a script from a bag filled with various plays.  Matt then could only speak lines directly from the script and Frank not only had to justify what Matt said, but also respond to the dialog in the scene.  See the video here: -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86Ybx1MwZ_s&feature=youtu.be
Vlad, Matt, and Frank perform
"Epic Poem"
There must have been a sale on both bachelorettes and teachers because they were everywhere this weekend.  Jen, a Special Education teacher, soon to be marrying Jeff, also a teacher(of anatomy) on June 30th was the focal point of another Bit Player’s “Serenade” on Saturday’s show.
After the intermission break, audience member Debbie (of the rowdy crew along the side wall, celebrating her birthday) was given a special birthday gift.  “Little Debbie” was honored with an “Epic Poem” all about her and mate, Paul, as performed by Vlad, Matt, and Frank.
Matt, Anna, Frank, and John in
"Irish Drinking Song"
Another audience member, Emma, not only celebrating her birthday, but also a BACHELORETTE AND A TEACHER, soon to be wedding Peter, an oil company baron, was the proud recipient of and “Irish Drinking Song” all about her, sung by Matt, Anna, Frank, and John.

The Bit Players in "Slideshow"

In the late night, 10 pm show, in “Slide Show”, Frank took us on a trip to Paris, where we met Parisian prostitutes and smoking midgets.  We also heard about Frank harrowing ordeal of getting lost while en-route to Nice.  However, his personal escort introduced Frank to her niece. Then, Frank was mugged by Gerard Depardieu.  Finally, Frank joined the Parisian Circus, fell in love with the bearded lady, procreated, and produced a boy in a box.  The rest is history.
John, Frank, and Stephanie in
"Doo Run Song"

Bruce and his sassy friend, Tim enjoyed the limelight in a “Doo Run Song” performed by John, Frank, and Stephanie Conrad .
Anna, Matt, and Stephanie in "Mini-Musical"

Although it was the late show and the players were running on adrenaline, they took on “Mini-Musical”.  The entire cast of players jumped in and belted out an assortment of tunes in a musical entitled,  “Forever Yours”

How appropriate to find as the subject of an “Irish Drinking Song” an audience member (Mary Ann) a forensic social worker who actually worked with the criminally insane.  Hmmmm… I wonder if she was thinking of corralling a few of the Bits to take back with her????

Friday, June 8th and Saturday, June 9th 2012

It was a week full of disappointments as “I’ll Have Another” was scratched from his entry in his bid for the third leg of the triple crown, my Keurig died a terrible death, and the Celtics… (need I say more??).  Like so many of the disillusioned wandering the streets of Newport,  I too was looking for an escape from reality during the weekend.  What better place to enter the world of the bizarre than the Firehouse Theatre and home to the Bit Players.  Little did I know that plan to escape reality would be knocked on its ear. (Geez, that sounds like Film Noir!)
Frank Fusaro, Neal Leaheey, and Dylan Eberle
in "Good Cop / Bad Cop"
The Friday night, capacity crowd was rowdy and offering some great suggestions as the Bit Players rolled through their sets.  In “Good Cop/Bad Cop”, Frank Fusaro and Dylan Eberle playing the role of the law enforcers,  interrogated Neal Leaheey, prodding this perpetrator to confess to the crime’s details submitted by the audience.  The crowd erupted with laughter and applause as Neal finally admitted to killing Ivan Drago (The villain of Rocky IV), with a Pregancy Test, in the Ninja Turtle Lair.
Michael "Biggie" Morgan of MTV's, The Pauly D Project
is "Serenaded" by The Bit Players
In a huge surprise of the night, (and I do mean HUGE), the Bit Players called to the stage Michael “Biggie” Morgan of the “Pauly D Project”… Yeah, talk about escaping reality here!  Biggie was a great sport as the Bit Players “Serenaded” him with lots of good natured ribbing about his Reality TV show and his recent engagement.  (Click on the link to watch the video and see what happened… -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJ3JL34obGE&feature=plcp)

The night was jam-packed with so many zany moments like in “Radio Show” where we listened to Dylan narrate Episode 14, part 2 of “Boris and His Pogo stick”.  In this episode our hero, Boris traversed a great canyon accompanied by his love interest Victoria and challenged by his rival, Duke Derrick. Other characters made cameo appearances like the priest who attempted Last Rites, and the Indian Shaman who saved Boris.
Dylan and Frank commentate
In "Sportcasters" as
Vlad and Matt perform their sport.
The Bit Players in "Mini-Musical"
In “Sports Casters” we watched as Frank and Dylan provided commentary on the “Ironing Bowl 2012” where Michael O’Malley, from Northern Ireland (played by Matt Lindman), and Lucy Leslie (Played by Vlad Tenenbaum) compete to the death in this ironing Olympic sport.
There was also “Mini-Musical” about “Crazy Steve and the Hat Factory” and the creation of Meat Hats? (ewwww!!)  I’m not sure if the audience was squirming in their seats from repulsion or absurdity of the idea of Meat Hats, but it’s not a scene they will soon forget!
And finally finishing off Friday night with a “Blues Song”, the audience delighted in the  singing of the “Curt Schilling Blues”.
Matt and John perform in "Sportcasters"
On Saturday, the theatre was again at capacity, and the energy was running high.  Due to its popularity, The Bit Players reprised the game “Sportscasters”.  With Chet and Chip our commentators (played by Frank and Dylan) we witnessed the “Cat Ball Bowl” where we saw Sophia (played by Matt) a spinster woman with 47 cats, living in her parents basement, and Raven (played by John Mulligan) a rookie to the Cat Ball Bowl,  go head-to-head in this sport of cat feeding.  Not only did we witness carnage on the stage, the audience was given an up-close, 3-D version, as Matt and John came out into the crowd and performed their antics.  The crowd loved John’s energy and were heard commenting about John’s likeness to the creepy brother from Wedding Crashers! (Click the link to view the video ->  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAwXTY66Zf0&feature=plcp )
Brittany Hunt, Matt Lindman, Frank Fusaro are the Bachellors
in the "Dating Game" with Stephanie Conrad and Host John Mulligan
John kept it going in his hosting of “The Dating Game” as Stephanie Conrad, our dater, was looking for love with one of the three illegible bachelors, played by Frank (who was reliving Fight Club), Matt (The Super Hero with extra-large earlobes) and Brittany Hunt(Octo-mom).  John in his role as host, could not be contained, as his self-deprecating character not only kept the quirky bachelors at bay, John helped Stephanie find a date with Robert Paulson of Fight Club.
Bachellorette, Elizabeth is "Serenaded" by The Bit Players
Bachelorette, Elizabeth got a call to the stage for a “Serenade” where the Bit Players had a little fun with this “slightly intoxicated” participant.  Along with Lizzy, the audience was the recipient of a call-back of a previously suggested item, the “hand-beater”, the weapon du jour in this evening’s performance of “Good Cop / Bad Cop”, and a second reference to “Crack-juana” that John exploited in “Jeopardy”.  Good sport, Lizzy played along with the Bit Players' abuse during her Serenade, but did she remember it in the morning? Hmmmmmm???
Dylan and Frank with Girl Scouts, Emily & Rachel
in "Tap The Audience"
The third time is always a charm (or was it??) as both the crack-juana reference and the hand-beater were brought back during “Tap The Audience” with our Girl Scouts,  Emily and Rachel providing the additional dialog (or in this case laughter).  Frank was on his own “high” in this scene with Dylan, as the two attempted to grow body parts, but ended up  having a really bad case of the munchies.  However, the scene ended up on moral high ground with a caution to all parents for their children not to do crack-juana.
The sold out Saturday 8:00pm show prompted the theatre to offer a late night 10pm show.

Matt, John, Dylan, and Vlad
in "Story, Story, Die!"

At the top of the late night show, in “Story, Story, Die!”, Bit Player bodies littered the stage as host, Vlad Tenenbaum killed off the players who bored him or hesitated in the story of “Ben’s Handbasket”

Vlad, Matt, and Dylan
in "Epic Poem"

Vlad and John perform "Location, Career, Death"

Lucky audience member, Jenna was the recipient of an “Epic Poem” about being a maternity nurse, which was performed by Vlad, Matt, and Dylan.
The late night crowd loved (loved, loved!)  John and Vlad in “Location, Career, Death” (also known as Broken Telephone) as Vlad mimed the audience suggestions of a Gay Bar as the location, the career of a Retired Wrestler, and a stinky shoe as the object in which John was to kill Vlad.
Another lucky couple (Nick and Bri, serving in the Army and Navy respectively) received a gift from the Bits by being the subjects for a “Doo Run Song”, performed by John, Dylan, and Stephanie.
Bringing Saturday night to a close, The Bit Players finished with a “Hoe Down”.  The audience suggestion of boating was a fitting end to a weekend in Newport and back to reality.

Friday, June 1st and Saturday, June 2nd 2012

Stephanie Conrad on guitar and Jim Foley on keyboard
provide the musical improv accompaniment for Friday's show

Frank Fusaro, Neal Leaheey
and Dylan Eberle in "Good Cop / Bad Cop"

With summer quickly approaching, the Bit Players switched things up a bit during the Friday night performance.  Jim Foley and Stephanie Conrad manned the musical instruments, with Jim at the keyboard and Stephanie on guitar.  Everyone delighted in the two’s playing of the “Law & Order” theme song when Neal Leaheey (the perpetrator) entered the room to start off “Good Cop / Bad Cop” where Frank Fusaro and Dylan Eberle (the cops), eagerly  grilled Neal toward a confession. As Neal stumbled on the last clue, the game was peppered with  hints  like Dylan’s “The touch, the feel of cotton[…] of our lives”  and Frank’s “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” until Neal finally confessed to the crime of killing Edgar Allen Poe, with a hearing aid, in the Underground Railroad.
In “Genres”, Dylan and John Mulligan took us all on a strange adventure into the world of “sexting”.  Who knew that a Wookie would be jealous when left out of the sexting loop?  Watch what happened in this video clip -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpEgJdGU868
Anna Smith, Frank Fusaro
and Dylan Eberle sing a
"Doo Run" song
Vlad Tenenbaum and
Neal Leaheey in "Sportscasters"
Our first bachelorette of the night, Daniella from Quincy, marrying Joe the History Teacher, was the recipient of  a “Doo Run” song, performed by Frank, Dylan and Anna Smith.  There were plenty of wicked bad Baw’ston accents and dropped “R’s” to be had.
In “Sportscasters” the announcers, Frank and Dylan kept the New England accent alive in Mow Bowl 2012, as they introduced Marty O’Malley and Sully both hailing from “Southie”.  Marty played by Neal and Sully played by Vlad Tenenbaum were the contestants in the Mow Bowl where Marty and Sully  performed various mowing activities… Well that was until the competition got fierce and Marty mowed off a drunken Sully’s arms.
Ending the first set, with their signature bit, “Bartender”, The Bit Players proceeded on their journey toward crazy town. With Anna and Vlad behind the bar, Neal sang about the black and white evidence of the Xerox copy of his interoffice affair.  John crooned about “too much spice” and cooking, analogous with the country’s current political state. Dylan went to the dark side with his problem of “no new kids on the block” looking for children to satisfy his creepy obsession of stalking them.  Then, Frank sang of his wife “PAM” and her problem of “a yeast infection” and how his life as a gingerbread man was affected.  Bartender Vlad, saw no real problem with Frank’s dilemma because PAM’s yeast could endow the gingerbread man, giving “rise” to many good things.
Courtney is "Serenaded" by
The Bit Players
In the second set, after intermission, Courtney, our second bachelorette was invited up to the stage for a Bit Players “Serenade”.  Courtney, from Long Island, marrying John, both in marketing, met through a mutual friend named Pam.  This got a chuckle as the audience recalled the earlier PAM reference.
Bringing Friday night to a close, The Bit Players finished with “Blues Song”.  The audience suggestion of the Queen’s Jubilee Blues paved the way for an amazing finish.  Watch the video to see what the audience was cheering about.

Matt Lindman, Stephanie Conrad, Jim Foley
directed by Vlad Tenenbaum in "Story, Story, DIE!"

On Saturday, performing to another packed house, the Bit Players added a second show to accommodate their fans.  To start off the 8:00pm show, The Players began with “Story, Story Die”.  The story “The Ant Who Climbed Mt Everest” saw many Bits bodies littering the stage as Vlad picked them off one at a time, until the last Bit standing was Jim who finished the story of Roger the ant and his sidekick Kensington with their wolf carcasses, planted the ant flag, and declared victory for all ant kind.
“Doo Run Song” performed by Stephanie, Brittany Hunt, and Tim Bric brought back in the Saturday lineup for “The 2 Sues” in the audience.  Sue I and Sue II were aunt and niece.  The two Sue's enjoyed taking care of babies and reading stories.
"Art Class" performed by
Vlad Tenenbaum
Vlad once again showed why he is the consummate story-teller in “Art Class” as he took the audience suggestions of Wind, Blinds, Heartbreak, a Butt, and a Tattoo and wove a mimed tale of characters in a tattoo parlor.  Astounded by the performance, you could hear the audience interjecting comments and “ahh-ing” as Vlad moved from suggestion to suggestion.
The Bit Players "Serenade"
Anthony & Michelle Piccorello
Anthony and Michelle Piccorello, hailing from Framingham, MA and celebrating their 36th wedding anniversary were called to the stage to be “Serenaded” Bit Players’ style. The Bits sang of  their 2 children graduating from BU, Anthony’s job with Chrysler,  and how the two did not hit it off when they met in that bar those many years ago.
Bachellorettes, Colleen and Jamie help
Matt Lindman and Jim Foley in "Tap The Audience"
With June being the month also known for weddings, it was no surprise that there were 2 more bachelorettes, (Colleen and Jamie) once again in the audience for Saurday's show.  Colleen and Jamie were called to the stage to help in a bit called “Tap The Audience” performed by Matt and Jim about an astronaut.

Saturday’s 10pm show brought back a Bit Player oldie.  As Matt and Jim told a story, Vlad sporadically interjected during their dialog, “That Sounds Like A Song”, and Matt and Jim had to finish their dialog,   about Food Shopping, in song.  The audience enjoyed Vlad’s torture of the players, but not as much as the signature line in the game, “Put it in your mouth and suck on it!”
Vlad Tenenbaum, Jim Foley, Matt Lindman,
Stephanie Conrad, and Birttany Hunt in "Bachelorette"
“Dating Game” renamed, “Bachelorette”  in honor of the girls who stayed to watch the 2nd show, (or who may have been too inebriated to leave the theatre) involved all of the Bit Players.  Brittany our bachelorette was looking for a relationship with one in the lineup of eligible bachelors, Vlad, Jim, and Matt.  Of course there is always a twist.  Interviewed by Stephanie, our eligible bachelors reveal their oddity by answering questions posed to them.  Matt believed himself to be Woody Woodpecker, Vlad had a 3rd nipple, and Jim thought he was Will Smith.  Brittany elected to give her rose to the one… the only… Will Smith.
